The Bird by Bird concept has been enormously helpful in my writing life, particularly when it comes to first drafts. So much so, that when I was giving nonfiction writing workshops several years ago, I would start with this idea, that we need to write what is easiest to write first, and take it all in small steps towards a larger achievement. I found it to be a way of encouraging writers, particularly new writers, to find excitement for the task -- through small achievements. Actually I think this is really fine advice in any endeavor that requires long-term commitment, it’s best to start with small steps, one by one, and go from there. Seems common sensical, but it hadn't occurred to me until I read (parts of) that book.
